Biofouling and bacterial infections are significant challenges in the use of biomedical materials, often leading to severe inflammation in the body by biofilm formation on implant surfaces. Addressing this, we propose a dual-functional hydrogel coating with synergetic antifouling and biocidal properties to prevent the initial infection and consequent biofilm formation. This coating is fabricated via photo-crosslinking, combining representative zwitterionic polymer, poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) (pSBMA), with a cationic biocidal polymer, poly(2-aminoethyl methacrylate) (pAEMA). Our results demonstrate that the hydrogel coating exhibits excellent biocompatibility and applicability to various substrate materials. The surface coated with p(SBMA@AEMA) hydrogel displays significant antifouling and bactericidal activities. The developed coating method holds great potential for enhancing the performance and safety of various implantable biomaterials and medical devices. |
